Music

We love music at our school. Singing takes place every week in Collective Worship for the whole school. We provide whole-class violin lessons to our Year 3s and 4s – free! This is funded through our PTA and by our annual local Music Quiz Night.

In addition to this, children may take instrumental music lessons with a visiting music teacher during school time.   We currently offer drum, strings, piano and guitar lessons.  Please see below for further details.

Drum

Drum lessons are arranged by Instinct Sounds, a Chippenham based music school established in 2004 by Joe de Berker www.instinctsounds.co.uk

providing children and adults with 121 drum kit, piano and guitar lessons as well as Samba and West African drumming workshops.

Lessons at Langley Fitz are taught by Finn Fraser-King is a professional drummer based in Bristol, since finishing a degree in Professional musicianship at BIMM in 2022.

Since starting drums at secondary school, Finn has undertaken various original projects and function sessions. Performing, all over the U.K. whilst also having a huge involvement in the jazz and hip-hop Jam scene in Bristol.

His biggest drumming influences include, Tony Williams, Keith Carlock, Roy Haynes, Steve Gadd, Yuessef Dayes, David Garibaldi, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Jo Jo Mayer and Richard Spaven.

Finn has been developing his teaching since finishing his degree. Not everyone learns in the same way and so making sure that each student has their learning style uniquely appreciated is of the utmost importance.

As well as music, Finn enjoys making really good food, going to gigs and practicing the drums.

Piano and Strings

Debi John offers 1-1 Piano lesson and also teaches the Violin Classes to Years 3 and 4 on Thursdays.
After over 20 years of working with young people with a wide range of abilities and interests from leading choirs of 200+ members, vocal coaching in large school music theatre productions, digital music looping projects, studio

projects, songwriting and leading music ensembles as well as exploring the use of instruments in the therapy room as a qualified play therapist, I still continue to love teaching and composing music to boost wellbeing and build up
communities. I have been a professional working musician and composer and still have strong ties with the music industry and keep up to date with what’s going on and the new music technology available to our young people. I currently work at Sheldon School, Chippenham two days a week teaching KS3 Music and some of the Music Tech A-Level course. I have previously worked full-time as a Secondary music teacher and Primary Teacher with years of extensive experience teaching large classes of 4/5-year-olds, all the way up to 18 year olds. I am also the founder of Play Healing CIC helping families and individuals to live the ‘play-fuelled way.’ Which has involved traveling abroad to work with refugee families displaced because of the Ukraine war and presenting at corporates including KPMG and Sony.

Guitar

James Ladd teaches the guitar at Langley.

I love teaching music and I thrive on inspiring pupil’s to have as much love for music and their instrument as I do. I have been teaching guitar, ukulele and bass for over 25 years and currently play in, and compose for, a number of bands from a 12-piece Afrobeat band to small jazz ensembles. Having played many big festivals and venues across the UK and beyond, I think encouraging pupils to share their skills through live performance is incredibly important; it’s amazing to see my pupils playing in bands and ensembles and experiencing this joy for themselves. I specialise in tailoring every lesson to the pupils’ needs, interests and goals whilst also differentiating any group lessons/workshops to ensure inclusion and enjoyment. I focus on igniting a lifelong passion for music, facilitating every pupil to fulfill their highest potential and becoming the best musician they can possibly be.

Please contact the school office to find out more about your child starting an instrument.
